JAMF - How To Perform a User-Initiated Enrollment in Jamf Pro

Objective

Following these steps will manually enroll a macOS device into MSU's JAMF.

Environment

macOS 11 or newer
JAMF

Before You Begin

  • The client computer must have an active network connection, preferably ethernet
  • Access to an account with administrative rights on the client computer
  • An MSU NetID with permissions to enroll devices in Jamf
  • macOS 11 or newer installed on the client computer

Steps

  1. Log in to the client computer.
  2. The user-initiated enrollment process is completed through the safari web browser. Open Safari and navigate to https://msu.jamfcloud.com/enroll (link).

  3. Log in with your MSU NetID and Password

  4. Do not enter anything in the “Assign to user” field and click Enroll

  5. Click Continue to install the MDM profile

    • You may see a pop up asking if you would like to allow downloads from msu.jamfcloud.com, click Allow

  6. Navigate to system preferences and click Install on the MDM Profile.
    1. System preferences will ask if you want to install the MDM Profile. Click Install

    2. You will be asked if you are sure you want to install the MDM profile. Click Install

    3. You will be asked for administrator credentials. Enter any local administrator’s username and password and click OK

    4. If successful you will see the MDM profile is installed

  7. Safari will show the following message letting you know that enrollment is complete.

  8. At this point Jamf will begin installing required profiles and settings. Once complete, you will see the following window appear automatically. This can take up to 5 minutes

  9. After all enrollment tasks have completed the text will change requesting you register this device with MSU. Click Register.

  10. Enter the appropriate information into the registration screen, then click Register
    1. End User NetID: Enter the NetID of the current or future primary user on this computer. If this is a shared device, or otherwise has no primary user, this field may be left blank
    2. Asset Tag: Enter the asset tag information for this device. If your department is not yet using tags this field may be left blank
    3. Department: Select the major academic unit or department where the end user works, or where this computer is being deployed. If you do not see your department listed, please contact the Client and OS Engineering team. Please do not leave this field blank
    4. Category: Select the class this device belongs to, or how it will be used most often. Faculty-Staff is for 1:1 computers, Shared-Device is for computers with multiple users. Please do not leave this field blank

  11. The computer will now begin sending registration information back to Jamf Pro

  12. Once registration is complete, the text will change and Jamf will begin installing and/or updating required software. This process could take anywhere from 15 – 60 minutes depending on the network speed.

  13. A restart must be performed to complete the onboarding process. Click Restart

  14. You're done! Enrollment is now complete.
