Summary

OpenAI plans to retire Custom GPTs and transition them to Plugins. The scheduled retirement date is December 11, 2026. Migration rollout began on September 22, 2026, and new Custom GPTs will no longer be able to be created after October 26, 2026. Timelines and migration availability may vary by account or workspace.

Quick takeaway: If you created a Custom GPT, migrate it to Plugins and test it before the retirement date. If you only use someone else’s Custom GPT, contact the creator about a replacement Plugin.

Overview

Migration may transfer Custom GPT instructions, knowledge files, and connected applications to a plugin. Existing conversations, custom actions, selected models, and sharing settings do not transfer automatically.

A migrated plugin starts as private, and the original Custom GPT becomes read-only after migration. Test and review the migrated plugin before sharing. After sharing, ask an intended user to install and test the replacement.

Migration Steps

  1. Open My GPTs. If migration is available, select Migrate GPTs from the notification banner.Uploaded image
  2. Locate the Custom GPT you created and select Migrate to plugin.Uploaded image
  3. Review the migration details. Confirm that instructions, files, apps, and actions transferred as expected. Review any warnings, then select Migrate to plugin.Uploaded image
  4. After migration, review and test the plugin. Select Edit plugin to make future changes.Uploaded image

Important MSU ChatGPT EDU Considerations

Third-party plugins and connectors are currently disabled by default in MSU’s ChatGPT EDU workspace. Creators should migrate their own Custom GPTs first. If the migration option is unavailable or a technical issue occurs, submit a request through MSU IT Generative AI Platform Request Assistance for support. ChatGPT EDU administrators may help migrate eligible Custom GPTs centrally when needed, but creators should still review and test the migrated plugin after migration.
