Overview of MSU Licensing for Adobe Creative Cloud
The MSU Tech Store helps to facilitate the renewal process on behalf of the university, as well as order for new users, and works to help current users stay licensed and productive. The Adobe license renewal date with Michigan State University is specified by contract and falls in May/June, regardless of when the license was purchased.
As an example, an end user who purchases a new Adobe license in January will still have to renew in May/June, albeit at a prorated price.
The MSU Tech Store also puts the contract date in the product descriptions to help avoid confusion early on in the purchase process.
It is highly recommended to set a reminder for the first week of May every year to place a RENEWAL order for the Adobe Creative Cloud Suite product that matters to you. Feel free to reach out to the MSU Tech Store at techstore@msu.edu with any questions about renewals. The MSU Tech Store will communicate via email multiple times in the weeks leading up to the renewal date in an effort to help anyone who purchased or was assigned a Creative Cloud license.

Devices With Only One User
In this case, the end user will want what is called a Creative Cloud Named User License.
This license is assigned an end user’s email address and has several benefits
- It can be signed into two computers at the same time
- One of those computers can be a personal computer, but one of the sign-ins must be on a departmental computer
- This license is transferrable – meaning, if a person in the department leaves, the license can be transferred to a new user’s emails address for the rest of the contract year
- Contact the MSU Tech Store at techstore@msu.edu with questions on how to transfer a license
How long does it take to get assigned a Named User Licenses?
- Less than two business days to process and assign the license to the email
- Must be an @msu.edu email address – email techstore@msu.edu with questions

Devices With Many Users
In this case, the end user will want what is called a Creative Cloud Shared Device License
This license that sits on a computer has a few important points
- It is a single license that stays with the computer unless uninstalled
- It is designed for public spaces, such as computer labs, library spaces or a workstation used by multiple staff members through a day
- It is transferrable, though these licenses should be strategic in design and more rare than a Named User License – please consider contact the MSU Tech Store at techstore@msu.edu for a consultation
- We need to assign an Adobe Administrator to install the license, which is why filling out the survey is so important

What If I Just Need Something Like Adobe Acrobat?
The MSU Tech Store, in partnership with Adobe, offers three products that are considered Perpetual Use. This means that as long as the license is still allowed on MSU owned machines, you can keep using the product. It can even be transferred if you get a new computer at no cost (please reach out to the MSU Tech Store at techstore@msu.edu with any questions).
Here are products that fall under the Perpetual Use category:
- Adobe Acrobat
- Adobe Photoshop Elements
- Adobe Premiere Elements
- COMBO Adobe Photoshop Elements & Premiere Elements
If you’re already getting the Adobe Creative Cloud suite, products like Acrobat and Photoshop are already included while you are licensed for the contract year. You do not need to purchase the Perpetual Use License if you already have a Creative Cloud Suite license.
I see this is just the software license – where do I get you get the software program itself?
- For Perpetual Use products, visit https://msu.onthehub.com (link) and pick out the software you need.
- There is no additional cost for downloading the software – the cost for the software is in the price of the license that you purchase at https://techstore.msu.edu. (link)
- License keys for the Perpetual Use software are filled within one business day.
