General Information

Elastic Storage is a shared file storage service available to MSU units.

You can use it for general file sharing, such as creating personal (U:) drives and shared (S:) drives for your staff.

MSU’s AD Governance Committee sets policies and best practices for Active Directory, Office 365, and Elastic to ensure long-term stability.

  • Format: \\es.msu.edu\[departmentOUname]

Getting Started

If your department does not have an Organizational Unit (OU) in CampusAD:

When requesting Elastic Storage

Provide this information to the IT Service Desk:

  • Desired share name (must include your OU name)
  • Requested size (in 1 TiB blocks)
  • Admin security group name (Recommended: OUNAME.SG.FileshareAdmin as a universal security group)
  • Estimated number of users
  • Contact person’s name, phone, and email

Automatic mapping

Elastic Storage can automatically connect (“map”) for users when they log in to a CampusAD-joined computer.

Backups and Snapshots

  • Daily snapshots kept for 30 days
  • Weekly snapshots (taken Sundays at 12 a.m.) kept for 90 days
  • Users can restore previous file versions themselves using the steps in the related article.
