Objective
Following these steps will connect your Windows machine to a network drive on fileshare.msu.edu.
Environment
Windows
Before You Begin
If you are mapping drives from off-campus, you will need to connect to the MSU campus VPN before following these instruction. You can find instructions how to connect a Windows machine to the VPN in KB 29 (link).
As of 6-13-2024: There's a known error with using the hostname to connect to FileShare. However, you can use either of the following IP addresses to connect directly instead of using the hostname:
Steps
- Select Computer, either from the Windows start menu or from a desktop icon, if available. Alternately, you can Press and hold the Windows key on your keyboard, then press the E key to launch Windows Explorer.
- Click the Map network drive button in the horizontal menu.
- Select any unused letter in the Drive menu. Use the drop-down menu by selecting the down arrow to display the list, and then select an item in the list to highlight and select it to populate the box with your selection.
- In the Folder field, type the desired server\share path.
- MSU Unit: \\fileshare.msu.edu\unit\share (ie: \\fileshare.msu.edu\myunit\staff and \\fileshare.msu.edu\myunit\home)
- IT Services Department: \\fileshare.msu.edu\itservices\Departments\ where department name is the name of your IT Services team (for example, ContentAndCollaboration).
- IT Services: \\fileshare.msu.edu\itservices (general storage for IT Services). (When you connect to the IT Services drive, the Department, Team and Personal Folder will also connect.)
- NSSC:
- S: \\fileshare.msu.edu\NSSC\Share
- U: \\fileshare.msu.edu\NSSC\Home
- Personal Folder: \\fileshare.msu.edu\itservices\Home\NETID, where NETID is your MSU NetID (may need to enter in all capital letters).
- Software: \\fileshare.msu.edu\software (commonly-used application installation files).
- Team: \\fileshare.msu.edu\itservices\deparments\teamname, where department name\teamname is the name of your IT Services team (for example, ContentAndCollaboration\Desktop Support).
- Check to fill the Reconnect at logon option.
Depending on prior settings, this may already be checked by default.
- Select Finish.
-
- If prompted for a network password, enter your login in the form campusad\<your netid> and your NetID password.
- You're done! The drive should now be mapped and accessible from your device.
