Network - Configuring Campus Firewalls for DHCP Users

Summary

This article describes how to configure campus firewalls.

Body

When a user computer connects to MSU's campus network, it will request that an IP address be assigned using a protocol called DHCP. In order to complete the process, the computer must be able to communicate with two services on the MSU campus, the main DHCP service and the university Domain Name System (DNS).

If a firewall prevents a user's computer from receiving data from one or more of these addresses, problems will result; registration may not complete successfully, or the user may not see the message notifying successful completion.

Campus network administrators and others who manage firewalls should configure them to accept communications to and from these IP addresses:

  • 35.8.2.22
  • 35.8.2.23
  • 35.8.2.45

The firewall should pass through to the user incoming packets from any of these addresses, type UDP, source port 67 (BOOTP/DHCP).
