Connecting To Windows Print Server Printers on MacOS - Internal

Objective

This article provides step-by-step instructions for adding network printers on macOS using the LPD (Line Printer Daemon) protocol.
These steps apply to all campus printers hosted on broad-print.campusad.msu.edu.

Before You Begin

Make Sure:

  • You're connected to the MSU campus network with a wired connection.
  • The proper drivers are installed. Canon drivers can be downloaded from the self-service portal or from their official website.

Steps

Add the Printer

  1. Open System Settings
    1. Go to Systems Settings --> Printers & Scanners
  2. Add a New Printer
    1. Select Add Printer, Scanner, or Fax...
  3. Configure the Printer
    1. Navigate to the IP tab in the toolbar
    2. Enter the following information:
      1. Address: broad-print.campusad.msu.edu
      2. Protocol: Line Printer Daemon - LPD
      3. Queue: Printer Share Name (EX: AISN270Canon8595)
      4. Name: Desired printer name
      5. Location: Room Number
      6. Use: Select Software --> choose the matching printer driver
    3. Select Add to complete the printer set up

Enable Department ID Management

  1. Open Printer Utility
    1. Go to Systems Settings --> Printers & Scanners
    2. Select your newly added printer
    3. Choose Options & Supplies --> Utility --> Open Printer Utility
  2. Switch User Management Mode
    1. In the Printer Utility window, change User Management to Department ID Management
    2. Enter Department ID and Pin
  3. Enable Department ID in Options
    1. Return to Options & Supplies --> Options
    2. Check Enable Department ID Management
  4. Select Ok to save settings

Additional Info

When you print for the first time, you may be prompted for your Department ID (and PIN if required).

Some department printers utilize secure print features which can be turned on in Options & Supplies --> Options.
