General Information about Spartan Drive

Summary

Spartan Drive is MSU's version of Microsoft One Drive. All faculty, staff, and students that are on the CampusAD Domain will have access to 5 TB of storage (with a maximum file size of 250GB) on Spartan Drive which is accessible over the web, desktop, tablet or other mobile device.

What is Spartan Drive?

Spartan Drive is MSU's version of Microsoft One Drive. All faculty, staff, and students that are on the CampusAD Domain will have access to 5 TB of storage (with a maximum file size of 250GB) on Spartan Drive which is accessible over the web, desktop, tablet or other mobile device. Snapshots of the data are kept for 30 days.Information on retrieving previous versions or deleted files is available in the "general" section below.

Acceptable Use

While this product has been approved as HIPAA-compliant, it should not be used to store confidential data (social security numbers, credit cards, bank data and more). Information about confidential data at Michigan State is provided in the MSU Institutional Data Policy. Acceptable use information is currently listed in knowledge base support articles and will be listed in the service information about Spartan Drive at is added to tech.msu.edu.

Availability

  • Spartan Drive is available to individual accounts for faculty, staff and students of Michigan State University.
  • Spartan Drive is not available to purchased departmental/unit accounts.
  • If an MSU employee leaves the university and their unit requests that their account to be deleted, the one drive account is transferred to their supervisor of record.

Sharing

Spartan Drive files can be shared with individuals at MSU or other specific people you indicate by email address. If you share a file or files with someone at MSU it will send them an email and prompt them to login with their MSU NetID and password. If they are not from MSU it will prompt them to login with a Microsoft account or create a Microsoft account in order to access the files.

Logging In

Go to portal.office.com and login with your MSU NetID and password and then click on OneDrive. You may need to click the "waffle menu" at the top left before OneDrive will show as an option (see screenshot below).

After logging in you can:

  • View files and photos you stored in Spartan Drive.
  • Create documents on your computer and edit on your laptop, phone, or tablet.
  • Share files and photos with others.
  • Collaborate with friends on your Office documents at the same time.

If you are attempting to share a Spartan Drive file with someone at MSU (@msu.edu email address) and you receive a message that "xxx@msu.edu is outside of your organization. You can share the file to this individual but the person will not be able to login to Spartan Drive to view and/or edit the file.

Spartan Mail and related Spartan 365 software, including applications located at https://spartan365.msu.edu and downloaded Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook), are provided to students while they attend the university and to faculty and staff members while they are employed by the university.
