What Is the Service?

Colocation allows MSU departments to place their existing servers in a rack in the MSU IT Data Center. This service provides a high level of security of university data and IT assets, and can optimize server storage and overhead costs for departments and the university.

The data center offers a secure, temperature-controlled environment with both utility and UPS backed power for added reliability and redundancy.

Server and Rack Options

Multiple server and racks provide flexible options.

Single Server
  • 2U of rack space
  • Two 1GB network ports
  • Central UPS and cooling
  • Typical wattage of .5 kW (nominal power draw)
Dual Server
  • 4U of rack space
  • Four 1GB network ports
  • Central UPS and cooling
  • Typical wattage of 1 kW (nominal power draw)
Quarter Rack
  • 8U of rack space
  • Six 1GB network ports
  • Central UPS and cooling
  • Typical wattage of 1.4 kW (nominal power draw)
Half Rack
  • 16U of rack space
  • 10 1GB network ports
  • Central UPS and cooling
  • Typical wattage of 2.8 kW (nominal power draw)
Full Rack
  • 32U of rack space
  • 1GB network ports (up to 20)
  • Central UPS and cooling
  • Typical wattage of 5.6 kW (nominal power draw)

Rates

Colocation is available to MSU departments at competitive rates that are charged to a departmental account on a monthly basis.

Server & Rack Rates
  • Single Server Rate: $35 per month, $150 one-time setup fee
  • Dual Server Rate: $50 per month, $250 one-time setup fee
  • Quarter Rack Rate: $75 per month, $350 one-time setup fee
  • Half Rack Rate: $120 per month, $450 one-time setup fee
  • Full Rack Rate: $200 per month, $550 one-time setup fee
Other Rates
  • Additional 1GB network ports: $15 each per month
  • 10GB copper: available as special quote
  • 10GB fiber: available as special quote
  • Firewall: available as special quote
  • Intrusion Prevention System (IPS): available as special quote

Service Level Information

This service is supported 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year with regularly scheduled maintenance periods.

Special Considerations

All colocation services must meet MSU IT approval, and MSU IT will install equipment and perform cabling.

Secure access to the colocation area is allocated through an MSU swipe card.
