Elastic Storage

What Is the Service?

A step beyond file shares, elastic storage is an enterprise-class storage system with a growing set of feature tiers, producing the right price point for a variety of storage needs. It provides secure, scalable storage, which includes automatically captured recovery points.

Elastic storage is an effective choice for all documentation, including research, business, teaching, and learning resources. Access is available to faculty, staff, student employees and university collaborators on most devices and from almost any location.

Benefits of Elastic Storage

  • Highly available storage with layers of hardware and software protection, supporting uptime and data integrity
  • Self-retrieval of data for up to 30-days with automatic recovery points
  • Server Message Block (SMB) and Network File System (NFS) available as network-attached storage
    • SMB and NFS mounts to all devices, including physical and virtual servers

Who Is Eligible to Use It?

MSU IT provides storage options to MSU departments to manage, protect, and provide access to data. Scalability, security, backup, and disaster recovery are key considerations when evaluating storage solutions.

Service Details

A CampusAD security group must be designated as the share owner to establish an Elastic Storage share. Only users within this security group are granted access to the share and the group holds full administrative privileges.

Share administrators utilize this security group to manage user access, create directories, adjust permissions, and perform all necessary tasks within the share. SMB shares are encrypted both at rest and during transit using SMB 3.0+ protocol.

Elastic Storage service allows access to all resources connected directly to MSU’s campus network and authenticated connections on MSU 3.0 wireless. Accessing Elastic Storage on all other networks requires MSU VPN.

Important note: Our elastic storage service allocates space in Tebibytes (TiB), which is approximately 1.1 Terabytes (TB) per TiB. Please ensure accurate representation of storage capacity.
