Overview

MSU Service Status (https://servicestatus.msu.edu) displays status information about services provided to the MSU campus by Libraries, Telecom, and IT Services. Status information may also reflect an event creating calls to IT Services Support or if the event is critical enough to affect a major portion of campus.

Information appears at https://servicestatus.msu.edu immediately after the alert is created or updated on MSU Service Status. Portions of this information are also displayed via RSS feeds (with 5 minute delay) on the home pages of several campus web pages including https://tech.msu.edu and others. These feeds can be used to display service status information in a variety of formats.

MSU Service Status contains three sections. The top section is an traffic light style dashboard showing the status of the services covered. The middle section displays information about active incidents and maintenance events and also has the maintenance calendar. The bottom section shows the history of affected services.

Notifications

The middle section informs customers (and staff members) of service outages or scheduled maintenance events that are currently affecting computing at MSU. Current alerts appear in this section as soon as they are entered and disappear as soon as they are closed. An entry also automatically appears in this section during the time when a maintenance event is taking place.

Reporting of Issues and Critical Events

Unexpected issues (unplanned service outages) that are causing or will cause a service to be unavailable should be identified to clients via an incident. Support Desk staff typically become aware of issues with a service that warrant posting an incident by way of any of the following:

  • Incoming client calls and contacts regarding an issue.
  • A service owner may recognize an issue or critical event occurring and contact the MSU IT Service Desk.
  • IT Services Support personnel see an issue indicated by service monitoring tools or other testing of a service.

In each instance, staff members must quickly identify the problem and determine whether a critical event has occurred. Problems that are "system-wide" and/or affect a significant number of customers are entered into the MSU Service Status so customers and support desks can be quickly and properly informed.
