Overview
OpenAI recently updated the pricing and usage model for ChatGPT Edu. As part of these changes, some premium AI features and advanced models now consume usage-based credits in addition to the standard ChatGPT Edu subscription experience.
The standard ChatGPT Edu license provided through MSU continues to include broad access to core capabilities such as:
- GPT-5.5 Instant
- Web search
- Canvas for interactive writing and coding
- Custom GPTs
The subscription also currently includes limited daily access to selected advanced features, including:
- 3 image generation requests per rolling 24 hours
- 5 Deep Research queries per rolling 24 hours
Additional advanced capabilities, including premium reasoning models, Codex, agents, voice, and certain experimental features, will consume credits.
To help maximize weekly credit availability and maintain sustainable access across the MSU community, MSU IT encourages users to follow the recommended usage best practices below.

Prioritize Core Features When Possible
Many common academic, administrative, and day-to-day workflows can be completed effectively using the standard ChatGPT Edu subscription.
Core features such as GPT-5.5 Instant, web search, Canvas, and Custom GPTs are appropriate for most routine tasks and generally provide the best value for everyday use.
Before selecting advanced models or premium capabilities, users are encouraged to first determine whether the standard experience sufficiently meets their needs.

Use Advanced Features Selectively
Advanced capabilities, including Thinking models, Pro models, Deep Research, advanced image generation, Voice, Agents, and newly released experimental features, consume credits. MSU IT recommends reserving these features for workflows that specifically require advanced reasoning, automation, research synthesis, or complex content generation.

Switch Back to Standard Models for Follow-Up Questions
When an advanced model, such as Thinking or Pro, is selected, ChatGPT may continue using that model throughout the conversation session. For routine follow-up questions or simple clarifications, switching back to the standard model can help reduce unnecessary credit consumption.

Manage Coding and Codex Usage Carefully
Codex usage consumes credits. Advanced coding workflows can consume credits rapidly, particularly when using Extra High or High Intelligence Modes, Fast Speed Mode, extensive context windows, or premium reasoning models.
To improve credit efficiency, users are encouraged to:
- Limit repository and project scope when possible
- Use mini or standard models for routine coding assistance
- Reserve premium execution modes for complex or time-sensitive tasks
