What is LON-CAPA?

LON-CAPA is an open-source freeware Learning Content Management and Assessment System. Originally, LON-CAPA started in 1992 in the College of Natural Science and Michigan State University where it supported a 90 student physics course at MSU and by 2015 had grown to serve over 100,000 students per year at over 100 institutions, ranging from middle school to graduate level courses.

Disciplines that have used LON-CAPA include:

  • astronomy,
  • biology,
  • chemistry,
  • civil engineering,
  • computer science,
  • family and child ecology,
  • food service and nutrition,
  • geology,
  • human environment and design,
  • human medicine,
  • mathematics,
  • medical technology,
  • physics, and
  • psychology.

At MSU alone, LON-CAPA currently serves an average of 5,000 course-students per semester.
