Wireless Network - How to Connect to eduroam Wireless on a MacOS Device

Objective

MacOS devices require complex configuration to connect to Michigan State's authenticated Wi-Fi networks.The university partners with SecureW2 to issue certificates and aid with device setup. Following these steps will walk you through the process of downloading and installing the necessary software to connect your macOS device to the eduroam wireless network.

Before You Begin

Michigan State University has adopted eduroam, which is used by many educational institutions as a secure way to offer WiFi to campus visitors. eduroam is available at many universities across the state and country, as well as some other locations.

Steps

  1. Connect to a Wi-Fi network with internet access.
  2. When the welcome page appears, select Accept & Connect to continue.
  3. Open a browser and visit wifi.msu.edu. You will be redirected to the SecureW2 setup page. 
  4. Confirm your device type.
    • Ensure the page detects macOS.
    • If it doesn't, use the dropdown to choose macOS.
  5. Select JoinNow. A disk image (DMG file) will begin downloading.
  6. Once the download completes:
    • Open your Downloads folder.
    • Double-click the file named MichiganState_Wi-Fi_Installer.dmg to mount the disk image.
    • If prompted, select Open to allow the installer to launch.
  7. Once the disk image is mounted (the icon will have changed):
    • Double-click MichiganState_Wi-Fi_Installer again to run the installer.
  8. If prompted with a warning about opening the file, select Open.
  9. In the application window, select Next to sign in. 
  10. A browser window will open. Log in using your MSUnet credentials.
  11. During the installation process, you may see the following prompts:
    • System access: Enter your macOS administrator credentials if asked to allow the program to make changes.
    • Keychain Access: If prompted to allow access to your Keychain, enter your Keychain password, and select Always Allow.
  12. Once the installation completes:
    • If your device connects successfully, select Done.
    • If connection fails, you'll see a message that installation succeeded but connection couldn't be completed. In that case, select Continue, then Done, and then manually connect to the eduroam network via System Settings > Wi-Fi
