Objective
Following these steps will complete the New Semester Registration Activity Guide process.
Effective Fall 2024, all students must have at least one emergency contact, cell phone number and current address in SIS.

Before You Begin
- The New Semester Registration Activity Guide will populate for all active students who are eligible to enroll into classes. All active students are assigned this activity guide for the upcoming semester on the last day of the current semester. Once assigned, students will see it immediately upon logging in and must complete it before gaining access to their normal student homepage.
- Effective FS24 forward, students who are missing Emergency Contact information in SIS will be required to enter at least one on the Emergency Contact page before proceeding to the next page.
- Effective FS24 forward, all students will be required to enter a PERMANENT address and a CURRENT address before proceeding to the next page, if one or both are missing. There is no way to skip or cancel out of the guide. Doing so will cause issues with the student's login session.
- Effective FS24 forward, all students will be required to enter a cell phone number if one does not currently exist in SIS.
- If students need to update the Home Phone, they should contact OneStop: https://onestop.msu.edu/
Steps
The New Semester Registration Activity Guide has six screens:
- Introduction
- Select Confirm and then Next.
- Contact Details
- If you already have a cell phone saved in SIS, you will see it listed in the Phone section of this page as Type Cellular.
- To get to the next page of this activity guide, students without a Cellular number must either click on the (+) symbol to add one, or click the box that states, "Please check this box if you DO NOT have a cell phone number to provide." NOTE: The (+) button does not disappear when a cell phone number is added. But, there are five (5) phone types that a student can choose from: Home, Campus, Cellular, Ext Org FAX, and Ext Org. If all of those values have a phone number, the (+) will disappear and the student will only be able to edit the existing numbers (except for the HOME phone number).
- If you DO NOT have a cell phone number, you must check the box indicating you do not have a number to provide.
- Once you have reviewed the existing number OR entered a cell number OR checked the box indicating you do not have a cell number, then you will be able to click Confirm and proceed to the next page:
- To enter a cell phone number you:
- Select the plus sign in the Add Phone icon
- Select Cellular from the drop down
- Enter the phone number
- Select Save
- Select Confirm to advance to the next page
- Otherwise, if you do not have a cell phone, check the box next to Please check this box if you DO NOT have a cell phone number to provide and then you can select Confirm to advance to the next page.
- Addresses
- You must enter both a Permanent Address and a Current Address before you can select Confirm and advance to the next page.
- When entering either a Permanent Address or a Current Address, the date entered in the *From field must be today's date. If a future date is entered for any address, the user will not be able to proceed to the next page.
- Emergency Contacts
- You must enter at least ONE emergency contact before you can select Confirm and advance to the next page.
- Privacy
- If the user wishes to restrict the release of certain categories of information, they may select Confirm and then Next.
- Complete Task
- Select Submit and then select EXIT to proceed to the student portal homepage.
