GoogleApps - HoW To Map a Web Address to a Google Sites Address

Tags how-to public

Objective

Following these steps will submit a request to have your GoogleApps site mapped to a URL, making it easily accessible as a web page.

Environment

GoogleApps

Before You Begin

Mapping to a site created using GoogleApps for Education Edition at MSU requires the following:

  • The site must be "public". To do so:
    1. Go to your Google site.
    2. Click on More Actions and then select Manage site.
    3. On the Manage site page, click Sharing in the left-column menu under Site settings
    4. Check the option Anyone in the world may view this site (make it public)
  • A domain ending in "msu.edu" must be assigned. Usually the assigned domain will be a subdomain of a department's. For instance the faculty member in the College of Education teaching TEC123 might be assigned a subdomain of TEC123.educ.msu.edu.

A subdomain assignment would be made by the department network administrator (aka department Hostmaster).

  • In addition to assigning a subdomain, the department hostmaster must point the CNAME value for the assigned domain to: ghs.google.com.

Steps

Once the prerequisites are fulfilled, contact the IT Service Desk with your mapping request and include the following information:

  • The MSU Google Apps Site URL you want to map to (should be something like https://sites.google.com/a/msu.edu/SITENAME)
  • The assigned domain name, such as: something.department.msu.edu
  • Confirmation that the department hostmaster has changed the CNAME value.
