MSU Print - How to Use the Spartan Card ID Readers to Release Print Jobs

Objective

Following these steps will use your Spartan Card ID to release your print job to be printed. This is intended to hold the job until you are physically present to collect it so sensitive information is not left sitting on the printer in the open.

Environment

Select locations around campus have Spartan card ID readers on the MSUPRINT printers.

Both the MSU Main Library and Gast Business Library have Spartan card ID readers on all MSUPRINT printers.

The College of Veterinary Medicine has a card reader on the printer in the CVM Student Center (only available for Vet Med students), available via Webprint (https://print.msu.edu).

If users do not require the Spartan Card printing feature, the complete list of campus printers is available on this tech.msu.edu page (link).

Before You Begin

Users must have sufficient MSU Print credits on their account, as with standard campus print jobs.  Without the required amount available, print jobs will not complete and users will not be charged.  Check the user's [Job Log] in Papercut to confirm the events.

Where 'print.msu.edu' interaction is required, users must be connected to an MSU network or the website will not load.

Steps

When printing from computers in the Main or Gast Libraries using File > Print

  1. You will need your Spartan Card ID to release your print job.
  2. Use File > Print to send the print job to the printer.
  3. Tap your MSU student ID card on the contact-less Spartan card reader on the printer to release your print job.

When printing from WEBPRINT (from anywhere on campus)

  1. Submit your print job from https://print.msu.edu
  2. When you are ready to release your print, you may tap your MSU student ID card on the contactless Spartan card reader on this printer to release your print job.
  3. If you do not have your Spartan Card ID, you may still release your print by releasing it in WEBPRINT.

Additional Info

Students may report issues with using their Spartan Card for printing.  Troubleshooting is limited to the following:

  1. Students must make sure they have sufficient print credits on their account.
  2. General issues with Spartan Card printing are usually caused by the age of the card itself.  New/replacement cards are recommended in such cases.
  3. Newly printed Spartan Cards should work on the printers by the next business day.
  4. The ID Office deals with general Spartan Card issues but isn't the primary support team for the MSU Print function.  Instead, handle the ticket per KB 707.
