Problem
When you open a file on Google Drive, you get a message that says: "This file is view-only. No edits can be made to this file. Contact the owner for details."
Environment
Google Drive
Resolution
Assuming the owner will not change the permissions to allow you to edit the file directly, you can either download the file and add it to your OneDrive, or make a copy of the file, which will give you ownership of that copy and allow you to edit it.
These methods do not automatically share the new item with the individuals that had access to the original.
Cause
This message indicates either:
- the file owner has set the file to disallow editing; or
- the file owner's account has been suspended, perhaps because they left MSU.
