Wireless Network - How to Connect to eduroam Wireless on an Android Device

Objective

Android devices require complex configuration to connect to Michigan State's authenticated Wi-Fi networks. The university partners with SecureW2 to issue certificates and aid with device setup. Following these steps will walk you through the process to connect your Android device to the eduroam wireless network.

Before You Begin

Michigan State University has adopted eduroam, which is used by many educational institutions as a secure way to offer WiFi to campus visitors. eduroam is available at many universities across the state and country, as well as some other locations.

  • The SecureW2 installer only works on Android 12 and newer.
  • Devices running Android 11 or earlier should register devices and connect to the MSUnet 3.0 network instead.
  • For best results, use the Chrome browser.

Steps

  1. Connect to a Wi-Fi network with internet access.
  2. When the welcome page appears, select Accept & Connect to gain internet access.
  3. Open a web browser and visit wifi.msu.edu. You will be redirected to the SecureW2 setup page.
  4. Confirm your device type.
    • Ensure the page detects your OS as Android.
    • If it doesn't, use the dropdown to select Android.
  5. Select Download to install the SecureW2 JoinNow app from the Google Play Store.
    • If the app is already installed, scroll down and select JoinNow to proceed.
  6. Open the SecureW2 JoinNow app.
  7. Sign in using your Michigan State credentials when prompted.
    • If not automatically prompted, return to the browser and select JoinNow to start the sign-in process.
  8. After signing-in, select Continue to return to the app.
  9. When prompted, allow any configuration changes requested by the app and select Next to proceed.
  10. When asked to Save or Allow the Wi-Fi configuration, confirm by selecting Allow or Save.
  11. Setup Complete
    • If your device was already connected to a different Wi-Fi network, you'll remain on it.
    • To switch to eduroam, go to your device Wi-Fi settings and select eduroam from the list. Your device will connect to eduroam automatically going forward.

If you're unable to connect, restart your device and try again. If issues persist, contact the MSU IT Service Desk.
