Overview
The first step in any migration to the campus active directory is to request a meeting with IT Services staff members to discuss the process, benefits, and possible timelines for migration. A request can be submitted by contacting the MSU IT Service Desk at 517-432-6200.
Other contact options for the IT Service Desk are available in the
Live Support Options section of the main
Client Portal page (link).
Before an MSU unit migrates into the campus active directory (CampusAD), an inventory of current systems should be completed so pre-checks can be run on each computer. These pre-checks will help ensure a smooth migration and help Central and local IT staff confirms everything has been considered before the migration and assist with testing and confirmation of services after the migration takes place.

Steps to Complete so Pre-checks can be Performed on the Computers
As a unit prepares to migrate their systems into the campus active directory, an inventory list should be provided (preferably in MS Excel) of all workstations in the unit to IT Services staff.
This list should contain all workstations that are on the current domain and include:
- The IP Address
- The Host Name
- User accounts associated to that workstation (if there are any)
- All users in that domain with NetIDs.
This information should normally be sent to IT Services staff approximately 1 week before the migration to allow adequate time to pre-check all of the systems.
This time may vary depending upon the number of machines to migrate.

Steps to Take if Pre-check Fails
If a workstation fails to pass a pre-check, the following should be checked and corrected to insure the workstation is ready for the migration:
- Confirm the user CampusAD\Domain Admins is a member of the Local Administrator Group on the computer.
This can and will normally be done by the CampusAD Domain Admins via a Group Policy (GPO).
- Verify the IP Address and Hostname for the failed workstation.
- Verify File Sharing and Remote Desktop are turned on or exceptions to the Window Firewall have been made for Ports #135, 139, and 455.
- Confirm the Anti-Virus program is not blocking the ports listed above.
- Modify any other 3rd Party Firewalls to allow the ports listed above.

Other Notes
The following other items should be also be reviewed with IT Services staff to help ensure a smooth migration. Services of specific interest are:
- Printers scanning to email
- Programs that email, save to shared folders, etc.
- List or connected servers and shared drives used by staff.
