Overview

StatusHub (https://servicestatus.msu.edu (link)) displays status information about services provided to the MSU campus by Libraries, Telecom, and IT Services. Status information may also reflect an event creating calls to IT Services Support or if the event is critical enough to affect a major portion of campus.

Information appears immediately after it is entered into the Service Status system. Critical elements of this information are also displayed via an RSS feed (with 5 minute delay) on https://tech.msu.edu (link) and others. These feeds can be used to display service status information in a variety of formats.

StatusHub contains three sections. The top section is an traffic light style dashboard showing the status of the services covered. The middle section shows notifications about active incidents and maintenance activities and also has the maintenance calendar. The bottom section shows the history of affected services.

Notifications

The middle section informs customers (and staff members) of service outages or scheduled maintenance events that are currently affecting computing at MSU. Current alerts appear in this section as soon as they are entered and disappear as soon as they are closed. An entry also automatically appears in this section during the time when a Scheduled Maintenance event is taking place.

Maintenance

Production services are routinely scheduled for maintenance or upgrades. When this occurs, an entry will normally be made into the Service Status System at least one week in advance. Maintenance that is critical or contains minor changes that will cause "no visible user changes" may be entered with less advance notice if deemed appropriate by a service provider. All known maintenance activities will show on this calendar. Select a day to see details about what is scheduled.

Service History

Once an "Alert" has been corrected or a "Scheduled Maintenance" has been performed, the information will continue appear in the "Service History" section of the web page for 7 calendar days. Historical information can be located by switching to calendar view or using the Prev week option.

Reporting of Issues and Critical Events

Unexpected issues (unplanned service outages) that are causing or will cause a service to be unavailable should be identified to clients via a Service Status Incident. Support Desk staff typically become aware of issues with a service that warrant posting a Service Alert by way of any of the following:

  • Incoming client calls and contacts regarding an issue.
  • A service owner may recognize an issue or critical event occurring and contact the IT Service Desk.
  • IT Services Support personnel see an issue indicated by service monitoring tools or other testing of a service.

In each instance staff members must quickly identify the problem and determine whether a critical event has occurred. Problems that are "system-wide" and/or affect a significant number of customers are entered into the Service Status System so customers and support desks can be quickly and properly informed.
