Overview

Microsoft is excited to announce that the Teams desktop app (link) | Teams web client (link) is being re-designed on a foundation of speed, performance, and flexibility and is generally available now as the next evolution of Microsoft Teams – new Microsoft Teams for Education.

Microsoft recently released a new version of the Teams app (link). The new Teams client has been in pilot testing with a group of MSU IT users over the past 3 months and the feedback from current customers has been very positive. The new version is available now for early adopters before it gets rolled out campuswide at the end of March 2024.

Benefits of the new client

Timeline of the Change

  • Use of the current, classic Teams client will remain available through March 31, 2024.
  • After March 31, anyone remaining on the classic Teams clients (web and desktop) will be automatically updated to the new Teams client.
  • In mid-May, any users remaining on classic Teams will be switched to new Teams, and the toggle to return to classic Teams will no longer be available. Microsoft will attempt to uninstall classic Teams, currently after a period of 14 days.

User Experience

Starting in March 2024, any classic Teams users who haven’t updated to new Teams will begin seeing an informational banner to remind them about the timeline for the Microsoft Auto Update. This banner will appear in the main Teams client window at the top of the page (underneath the main bar). See this Microsoft Support page (link) for full details.

Known Issues

  • After installation, the new Teams client defaults to the Grid view of teams. To go back to List view, go to Settings then Appearance and Accessibility and change the setting back to the List view.
  • Once you have switched to the new Teams client, you may need to set up your audio devices again.
  • Mac customers will be prompted to provide permissions for the new client to access audio devices and to share their screen in Teams.
