Objective
Following these steps will connect your MSU Spartan Mail account to your Android device using the built-in mail application.
Environment
Android
The screenshots below are examples taken from an HTC One M9 running Android 5.0. Please note that the process may differ for your device.
Before You Begin
You will be prompted for a multi-factor authentication during this process, so be sure to have your credential ready.
These instructions use the built-in mail app for Android. For instructions to use Microsoft Outlook, please see this page (link) on support.microsoft.com. MSU does not require the Intune Company Portal, so you can skip step 1.
Steps
- Open the Mail app on your device and add a new account.
- Select the option for an Exchange server.
This may appear as Microsoft Exchange, Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync, or something completely different.
- When prompted to add your account, enter your full email address as the user name and your NetID password.
- Select Next to continue. The auto-discover process should automatically locate the server and move to the Exchange ActiveSync settings window. If this occurs you may skip to step 6.
- If the auto-configure process fails to locate the server, you will need to enter the information manually. Required settings are provided below.
- Verify your account settings. Specific settings are provided below: Select Next to move to the Exchange ActiveSync settings window.
- Email Address: netid@msu.edu
- Server Address: outlook.office365.com
- Domain: None (Leave blank or try netid@msu.edu if required)
- Username: netid@msu.edu
- Password: Your NetID password
- Secure (SSL) Connection: Enabled
- Continue to the completion screen. The account name will likely default to msu.edu, however you may adjust it as desired.
- Select Finish, or the equivalent provided by your app, to complete the process.
- You're done! Your Spartan Mail account should now be connected to your Android device.
Additional Info
Android users may be prompted to Activate Device Administrator Mode. Because of the server's admin rights requirement, some devices and mail apps provide a warning message(s) or require assent to one, several, or many admin capabilities. These warnings are generated by the app and not by the server. Select Activate to continue to the final set-up step.
