How to Download Spartan 365 for a Personal Device

Objective

Following these steps will install Spartan 365 (Microsoft Office 365) on a personal device.

Before You Begin

These instructions are not intended for university-purchased devices, as those should have the software automatically installed. If not, contact your local IT for assistance, or reach out to the IT Service Desk at (517)432-6200.

You will need your multi-factor authentication (MFA) credential to log in to portal.msu.edu. Please have it ready for this process.

Steps

  1. Check if your licensing allows Office downloads on tech.msu.edu (link).
  2. If your licensing allows, then navigate to portal.office.com (link).
  3. Enter your MSU email address (netid@msu.edu) and select Next, or select your MSU account, if it already shows as an option
  4. An auth.msu.edu login screen should appear. Log in with your MSU email address and MSU NetID password.
  5. You will be prompted to verify your identity using your MFA credential.
  6. You have the option to Stay signed in to reduce the number of times you are prompted for a login
  7. Select Install apps from the top-right of the screen.
  8. Select Microsoft 365 apps
  9. Follow the prompts that appear on screen.
  10. You're done! You've now installed Spartan 365 on your personal device.
