Network - How To Connect to the Guest Wireless Network at MSU

Objective

MSU offers guest wireless access to people visiting MSU that doesn't require registering their devices to connect. Following these instructions will get you connected.

Environment

All wireless devices

Before You Begin

Even though registration is not required to use the guest wireless, you will still agree to abide by MSU's Acceptable Use Policy (AUP) (link).

If you have a valid MSU NetID you may still use the guest wireless, but a better connection is available by registering your device and using MSUNet. See this article (link) for instructions.

Steps

  1. On your device, select the MSUNet Guest network (SSID) to connect
  2. Launch your web browser
  3. Browse to https://wireless.msu.edu/. If your browser displays the requested webpage then you are already connected. Otherwise, you will be redirected to the MSU Guest Access page.
  4. If prompted, accept the certificate "for this session only"

  5. Read through the Agreement and then select I Agree. You will be redirected to your home page in 10 seconds.

  6. You're done! You're now connected to MSU's guest wireless network.

Additional Info

If you have trouble connecting to the guest wireless network, some of the steps below have been useful to resolve issues:

  • Switch the SSID from MSUNet Guest to MSUNet 3.0 and then back to MSUNet Guest (most common fix)
  • Attempt to open a non-secure (http instead of https) web page - https may prevent the necessary re-direct to the agreement page
  • Switch to a different browser on the device

  • Your office or home network settings may not work with the guest wireless. To connect, you need DHCP enabled and your device set to obtain an IP address automatically
  • Switch your wireless card off and on
  • Temporarily disable your ethernet (wired) card
  • Change the order of your preferred networks
  • Flush DNS on your device
