Classroom Support - User Installed Software in Computer Classrooms

Computer Classroom Use Policies

Computer Classroom users may attempt to log in and install software they own or freely available browser plug-ins on Classroom Computer machines.

[OCTOBER 2025 UPDATE] - Users no longer have local admin privileges on campus PCs except in specific locations.  This was required because of Client OS infrastructure changes.

List of locations that still allow third-party software installation (users have local admin elevation):
- (PAC) Packaging, room 121
- (HE) Human Ecology, rooms  105 / 106 / 109 / 208
- Library Digital Scholarship Lab, Main Library 2nd floor West  (https://lib.msu.edu/dsl)

If a user logs into any other CAMPUSAD classroom or lab computer they will get an error message "Requested operation requires elevation" during the installation attempt.

If the user is not close to any of the listed locations, and an urgent solution is needed, then the Virtual Desktop (vdi.msu.edu) still allows for third-party software installation.

**Upon user log out, all changes made to the computer will be erased.  Users should take steps to back up all personal files to portable storage, or to save their files onto OneDrive.

As stated on http://tech.msu.edu/computerlabs/index.php, MSU instructional Computer Classrooms are provided primarily for academic use by MSU-affiliated individuals including students, faculty, and staff. Activities, including user software and plug-in installs not specifically related to instruction, research, or outreach are allowed within certain limits.

A full suite of software including browser and other plugins is installed and regularly updated in support of this primary use. Instructors can request other software installations in advance. Refer to the website for complete information.

Requesting Additional Software

If you require a certain program to be installed permanently on a set of computers, you need to submit a service request. You can use the Request Classroom Software button on the right side of this article.
