Network - How To Register Your Device for DHCP and Get Connected

Summary

After completing these steps you will have registered your device and connected it to MSU's network.

Body

Objective

After completing these steps you will have registered your device and connected it to MSU's network.

Environment

All devices with a network connection, both wired and wireless

Before You Begin

Devices using private MAC addresses must be registered while connected to MSU's network, as they randomize the MAC address for each network. For the most reliable connection, disable this feature for MSUNet. For information how to disable this feature for your device please see these instructions on MSU's DHCP Site (link).

Steps

  1. Launch an internet browser and navigate to: https://getonline.msu.edu.
  2. When the login screen appears enter your MSU NetID and password and select SIGN IN.

  3. Fill out the form under Step 1: Register an Additional Device. Each item has a small (?) icon next to it. Hovering over that icon will show a tip about what each is for:
    • Full Name: Name of the primary user of the device
    • Ethernet/Wi-Fi MAC Address: 12-character string consisting of A-F, 0-9 only

    • Location of device: The location where you typically will use your device
    • Description of device: A description for your device
  4. Select Register Now.
  5. Wait several minutes after registration and then restart your computer.

Additional Info

Devices without web browsers or unable to connect to the DHCP Registration service

Some devices like Smart TVs and gaming platforms like Xbox and Playstation cannot connect directly to getonline.msu.edu prior to being registered. Others, like wireless printers, do not have any kind of built-in web browser. You will need to first register a device that can connect successfully, then follow the same steps above as before on the registered device, but enter the information for the device that could not connect.

WiFi / Wireless Printers

These devices usually have additional setup required after getting a valid network connection. Consult your printer documentation or online support information for more.
