Network - How To Find the MAC Address for a Device

Objective

These instructions will help you locate the MAC address for your device, which is needed when registering to connect it to MSU's network.

Environment

This guide covers many common device manufacturers (click a link to jump to instructions for that device).

Steps

Amazon Echo

  1. Open the Amazon Alexa app (download to your phone or computer as needed).
  2. Sign in with your Amazon account.
  3. Connect to the wireless network transmitted by your Echo device. The wireless MAC address for your Echo is at the bottom of the Echo Setup screen.

Amazon Fire Stick

  1. On Home Screen, select settings.
  2. select System.
  3. Select Network.
  4. The MAC address will be listed (Wi-Fi) or (Wired)

Android OS

  1. Select the Home button.
  2. Select Menu.
  3. Select Settings.
  4. Select About Phone.
  5. Select Status.
  6. Scroll down to see your Wi-Fi MAC address

Apple Mac OS X

Pre-14.1

  1. Select the Apple icon in the top left part of your screen. Select System Preferences.
  2. Under Internet & Network select Network. The Network window will be displayed.
  3. On the left part of the window, select Wi-Fi. Select it if it is not already highlighted.
  4. Select the Advanced button in the lower-right corner. This will bring up another window with menu options.
  5. Select Ethernet. The MAC address is called Ethernet ID.

  1. Select the Apple icon in the top left part of your screen. Select System Preferences.
  2. Select Network from the menu on the left
  3. Select Wi-Fi from the right of the screen
  4. Select Advanced from the bottom-right
  5. The MAC is listed as Wi-Fi MAC address.

Apple TV

  1. From the main menu, choose Settings, and then click About
  2. Look for the MAC address next to Ethernet ID for the wired network or Wireless ID for the wireless connection.
  3. Alternatively, you may find the MAC address printed on the UPC label on the Apple TV box.

Chromebook/Chrome OS

  1. In the lower right corner of your screen, click the network Wi-Fi icon
  2. Select the section that says Connected to and the name of your network.
  3. At the top of the dialogue box that opens, select the name of your network.
  4. In the window that opens, find the Connection tab and look for Hardware address. It will look something like this: 0C:88:CC:C0:88:8C.

Chromecast

  1. Run the Chromecast Home app on your smartphone or tablet.
  2. Start the Chromecast setup.
  3. Once you've reached the wireless/wifi selection page, click the three-dot icon on the top right of the window.
  4. In the window that opens, look for the MAC address. It will look something like this: 0C:88:CC:C0:88:8C.

iPhone/iPod/iPad (iOS)

  1. From the Home menu, tap on Settings.
  2. Scroll down and select the General Button.
  3. Select About.
  4. Scroll down to Wi-Fi Address.

Linux

  1. The ethernet device is typically called eth0.
  2. In order to find the MAC address of the ethernet device, you must first become root, through the use of su.
  3. Then, type ifconfig -a .
  4. The MAC addres is the HWaddr listed on the first line.

Nintendo Wii

  1. When at the Wii Menu screen, click the Wii icon in the lower left corner.
  2. Select Wii Settings.
  3. Select the arrow on the right side of the screen to advance to the next page of settings.
  4. Select Internet.
  5. Select Console Information.
  6. The MAC Address for your console will be displayed. After you have written down the address, repeatedly select Back to return to the Wii Menu screen.

Playstation 2

  1. Load the Network Adaptor Startup Disc in your PS2.
     
  2. Walk through the Start-Up CD until it starts testing your connection. Since the console is disconnected the test will fail.
  3. You can now press the select button which will display the MAC.

Playstation 3

  1. Power up the PlayStation 3 without any disc in the drive.
  2. Once the PlayStation 3 operating system has loaded, select Settings.
  3. Once you are in Settings select Network Settings
  4. When the Network Settings list appears, select the first option which is titled Settings and Connection Status List.
  5. The physical address will be listed under MAC Address.

Playstation 4

  1. Power up the PlayStation 4 without any disc in the drive.
  2. Once the PlayStation 4 operating system has loaded, select Settings.
  3. Once you are in Settings select System.
  4. Then select System Information.
  5. Look for the MAC Address (LAN Cable) to add the Ethernet/LAN connection. The same goes for the MAC Address (Wi-Fi).

Playstation 5

  1. Power up the PlayStation 5 without any disc in the drive.
  2. Once the PlayStation 5 operating system has loaded, select Settings, in the upper right.
  3. Once you are in Settings select Console Information, under System Software.
  4. Look for the MAC Address (LAN Cable) to add the Ethernet/LAN connection. The same goes for the MAC Address (Wi-Fi).

Roku

  • Option A: On the back of the player, there is a set of two, six-digit numbers. One is the Wireless MAC Address and the other is the LAN (Wired) MAC Address; or
  • Option B: Launch your Roku device. Go to the Home Screen and choose Settings. Then choose Player Info. The MAC Addresses will be listed on the screen.

Samsung Smart TV

  1. Go to your TV's menu and choose Network >> Network Settings.
  2. Choose Network Status.
  3. The MAC address is the first thing in the list. (It's possible this number will change as the TV detects a wired connection. Please wait a moment to see if it does change.)

TiVo DVR

All TiVos have their MAC addresses displayed on the back of the device. It will be in the upper left hand corner of the device, next to the TiVo Serial Number and other product information.

Vizio Smart TV

  1. Press the Menu button on the remote and select Network, and then Manual Setup.
  2. The RJ45 (Ethernet/LAN) and/or Wireless MAC address will appear on the screen.
    • The RJ45 MAC address is only used for physical connections (an ethernet cable plugged into the device)
    • The Wireless MAC address is only used for wifi connections (like connecting to MSUNet 3.0)
    • If you plan to use both, you must register both MAC addresses

Wifi Printers

  • MAC addresses are generally printed on the printer packaging or on a sticker on the back or side of the printer, near the Ethernet and/or fax ports.

Windows 7

  1. Select the Start icon.
  2. Select Control Panel.
  3. Select Network and Internet.
  4. Select Network and Sharing Center.
  5. Select Change Adapter Settings from the list on the left hand side.
  6. You may have a separate icon for your Wireless connection and/or Ethernet (Wired). Each has its own MAC address.
  7. Right-click on the connection you are trying to find the MAC address for and select Properties.
  8. Hover your mouse over the text box underneath connect using. Your MAC address will appear in the tooltip and is made up of 12 characters e.g. 00:11:22:AA:66:DD.

Windows 8

  1. On the Start screen, type Network and Sharing.
  2. Under the search box, select Settings.
  3. Select Network and Internet.
  4. Select Network and Sharing Center.
  5. Select Change Adapter Settings from the list on the left hand side.
  6. You may have a separate icon for your Wireless connection and/or Ethernet (Wired). Each has its own MAC address.
  7. Right-click on the connection you are trying to find the MAC address for and select Properties.
  8. Hover your mouse over the text box underneath connect using. Your MAC address will appear in the tooltip and is made up of 12 characters e.g. 00:11:22:AA:66:DD.

Windows 10

  1. Select the windows icon at the bottom right of the screen. Some people call this the start menu.
  2. Select Settings from the left list.
  3. Select Network & Internet from the window that popped up.
  4. Make sure your connection method is selected on the left of the window. Wi-Fi should be highlighted if you are connecting that way and Ethernet should be highlighted if you are connecting using a cord.
    • For Wi-Fi select Hardware Properties under the list of connection names on the right side of the window. The MAC address will be called Physical address (MAC) and should look like A1-2B-C3-D4-E5-F6.
    • For Ethernet select your connection name on the right side of the window. It will have the same Mac address style as Wi-Fi above.

Xbox

  1. Turn on your Xbox console with no game disc in the disc tray.
  2. From the Xbox Dashboard, choose Settings.
  3. From the Settings screen, select Network Settings.
  4. The MAC address is the 12-digit number at the bottom-right corner of the Network Settings screen.

Xbox One, and Series S/X

  1. Press the Menu button on your controller.
  2. Navigate to the Settings page.
  3. Select Network.
  4. Select Advanced Settings.
  5. MAC address will be listed next to Wired MAC on the right hand side of the screen.

Xbox 360

Old Dashboard

  1. Go to the System area of the Xbox Dashboard and select Network Settings.
  2. Select Edit Settings.
  3. Under Basic Settings, check to make sure the IP Settings is on Automatic.
  4. Select Additional Settings and select Advanced Settings.
  5. The MAC address is located at the bottom of the screen, called Wired MAC Address.

New Dashboard

  1. Go to the System area of the Xbox Menu.
  2. Select Network Settings.
  3. Go to Configure Network
  4. Go to Additional Settings and select Advanced Settings.
  5. The MAC address is located at the bottom of the screen, called Wired MAC Address.
