Purpose

Microsoft is retiring Stream (Classic) in favor of Stream (on SharePoint). The new Stream app allows users to create, store and share videos securely and seamlessly. Video files are directly stored in SharePoint, Teams, and OneDrive through Stream, making collaboration is easier than ever. Improvements to the interface include easier ways to record short videos, preview recordings, and share content on Teams.

Part of this transition to Stream (on SharePoint) involves migrating content previously stored on Stream (Classic) to the new platform. MSU IT will be sending out communication to all affected OneDrive users and Team owners ahead of each migration. No action is required from individual content owners.

FAQs

Who Is Affected?

The migration affects all users and groups with videos stored in Stream (Classic). Most users have already migrated to using the new Stream (on SharePoint) platform, and this migration will NOT affect any content stored there. All Teams recordings have been stored in Stream (on SharePoint) since Fall 2021, and thus will not be affected.

When Is Migration Taking Place?

The Stream Migration project is scheduled from February 2024 through March 2024. Email notifications will be sent in advance to all affected users.

Where Can I Find My Migrated Videos?

  • Content owned by individuals can be found in OneDrive > Steam migrated videos.
  • Content owned by a group (team) can be found in SharePoint > Documents > Stream migrated videos.

Will My Old Links Still Work?

Yes. Existing links and embed codes will be redirected to Stream (on SharePoint) until February 15th, 2025.

Will People Retain Access to Videos I’ve Shared With Them?

Yes. The video will be stored in the owner’s OneDrive, and automatically shared with any additional owners or viewers.

Where Can I Find More Information About Stream (On SharePoint)?

Check out our collection of Knowledge Base articles! (link, KB 1556)

Will My Videos Be Accessible During Migration?

You may experience interruptions in video playback during the migration. Each phase of migration is expected to take 24-72 hours.

Can I Avoid Interruption to the Service?

Yes. If you have videos stored on Stream (Classic) that you want to be accessible during migration, you can manually migrate them to Stream (on SharePoint) ahead of time. Follow these instructions (link, KB 1903) to download your videos from Steam (Classic), and then upload to Stream (on SharePoint).

If you experience issues with video playback after migration has concluded, please contact the MSU IT Service Desk (link).

What Content Will Be Migrated?

All video content will be migrated EXCEPT unpublished videos, videos in an error or processing state, and video in the Recycle Bin.

Should I Delete Any Videos?

Users are encouraged to delete any videos that are no longer needed, or that already exist in other locations. This will aid the migration process by ensuring unnecessary videos are not moved over to the new platform.

My Content Has Been Migrated, What Should I Do?

Once the migration is complete, we recommend taking the following actions:

  • Review content in OneDrive > Stream migrated videos to ensure all content was migrated
  • Review sharing permissions on migrated content to ensure the correct access is granted
  • Test the playback capabilities of Stream (on SharePoint) and explore the new experience

If you have questions or encounter issues, please contact the MSU IT Service Desk (link).
