Problem
When attempting to visit an MSU website, you receive a 400 Bad Request error, the verbiage of which may change depending on the web browser you are using. The HyperText Transfer Protocol (HTTP) 400 Bad Request response status code indicates that the server cannot or will not process the request due to something that is perceived to be a client error.
Environment
MSU.edu Websites
Resolution
Clearing your browser's cache and cookies should clear this error and allow you to visit the website normally. Please see KB 15 for guidance on how to clear your browser's cookies and cache (link). That article also includes links to each company's support sites for their browsers.
If you repeatedly run into this issue on particular MSU websites, please report the issue to the MSU IT Service Desk (ITSD) so they can contact the web developers for the site and get corrective action started.
Cause
The size of a request header field exceeds the server limit. MSU websites are sending too many cookie data to the domain: msu.edu. This is mostly caused by analytics such as Google Analytics and Hotjar on MSU websites.
