General Information about FPIDs at MSU (NetID)

This article contains information on the following topics:

What is an FPID NetID?

FPID NetIDs are generated for use when login access to MSU systems is required for a non-MSU affiliated person. Normally an MSU email account will not be provided.

The NetID is time-limited (expires after 1 year, but renewable) and there is no fee associated with the account.

The FPID ID is a 9-digit number which is an uppercase F followed by 8 numbers, e.g. F00001234. This holds the place of the ID# in the NetID record where there is a SSN in a faculty-staff record, an APID in a student record or an EX-ID in an Others record.

The FPID NetID is 8 characters - a lowercase "f" followed by 7 numbers, e.g. f0000123. An FPID and an FPID NetID share the first 7 numeric digits, but the NetID has the final digit truncated or dropped. So, if the FPID is "F00001234' then the NetID is "f0000123".

Who gets an FPID?

FPIDs and FPID NetIDs were created for use by MSU Affiliated (i.e. non-faculty/staff, non-student) persons who need login access to systems and services such as D2L or VPN, but normally access does not include email. There are a variety of registered Affiliate Groups that acquire FPIDs and FPID NetIDs. Groups can be long-term or short-term and can come as a cohort (e.g. summer group programs) or individually (e.g. academic Visitors to MSU). Groups that come as a cohort have a Group Coordinator who handles the acquisition and distribution of that group's FPID information.

Depending on the Affiliate Group, some affiliated persons will acquire ID cards and if a card is printed it will display the full FPID# on the front of the card. Other FPID users will acquire FPID NetIDs simply for login and will not have ID cards.

FPID Activation and Password Reset

FPID NetIDs are activated at netid.msu.edu for initial setup using the assigned one-time use PIN. If an FPID holder subsequently needs a password reset, and their identity cannot be confirmed, they will need to follow steps to re-activate the account.

FPID passwords can be reset in Okta. Identity verification must be both name and date of birth (DOB). If DOB does not appear in Okta, they will need to re-activate their FPID like before.

When activating the FPID NetID, the FPID must be entered using the uppercase "F".

If a user needs a new PIN for re-activating their FPID NetID, they can call or come to the ID Office during our regular business hours. If the user is part of an Affiliate Group cohort, then the Group Coordinator can also help them acquire a new PIN.

Forgotten or Unknown FPID NetID

An FPID NetID is a type of NetID and considered sensitive and confidential and should NOT be given out.

If someone has forgotten or does not remember what their FPID NetID (username) is, they have to activate their FPID NetID again using the F-PID and current PIN. They can either submit a PIN request online, from netid.msu.edu, or contact the ID Office directly.

FPIDs and Email access

When an FPID Netid is activated, the standard NetID activation screen displays which contains a misleading message indicating that the user can link to email. This message is erroneous. FPIDs do not have email access except in cases where a sufficient business case has been provided by the requesting department. The lack of email access is explained to the groups that acquire FPID NetIDs, but the information is not communicated to the users.

Whether or not there is an email account provided, An FPID NetiD is searchable in the Office 365 Mail Tool.

If providing a Spartan Mail account was approved when handling the request there will be child request ticket to Messaging attached to the main request and the tools365.mail.msu.edu tool will show the account with an "Exchange Mailbox Type" of (O365) UserMailbox.

FPIDs and CampusAD

FPID NetIDs are intended to provide limited AD login privileges such as classroom computer / lab login, or VPN (contractors). Normally no email account is provisioned. Those that are approved to have a Spartan Mail mailbox that will show up with CampusAD accounts.  Their exchange properties may show an email address of <firstname>.<lastname>@affiliate.msu.edu in addition to <FPID>@msu.edu.

The <firstname>.<lastname> entry is an alias. To log in to Spartan Mail, they should use <FPID>@msu.edu as their login name. All mail sent to either <firstname>.<lastname>@affiliate.msu.edu or <FPID>@msu.edu will go to the same mailbox, so they can give out either address to people that need to contact them.

What can get an FPID NetID access?

FPID NetIDs have login access to D2L, DHCP and WIFI. Other login access may be provisioned as requested by a Group Coordinator. FPID NetIDs can be setup to feed to D6501 so that Access Request Form access can be requested for them – this is not the default setup but it can be requested. It is how Athena SW access is currently handled for non-MSU persons.  Users requesting VPN access need to wait until the following day after ID activation before resources are available.

Who manages the FPID system?

All FPIDs are requested through, processed by and maintained by the ID Office.

When an FPID NetID is added for an individual person, there should be a ticket in CA ITServiceDesk which contains a comment with the original PIN assigned to the FPID NetID. For those who have access to CreatorWeb, this can be helpful in determining if the user has activated the NetID. If the PIN has changed, it has been used for activation.

How can a department request an FPID NetID be issued?

Direct the caller to email their initial inquiry to idoffice@msu.edu to get the process started.

ID Office will direct them to their request form linked to on https://netid.msu.edu/other/ (https://msu.co1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_5sYmwjRsGYmoErb) with the instruction to fill that form out for each needed party/affiliate/NetID. If the request is for affiliate status to be applied to an existing NetID, the department should enter a notation indicating that NetID in the comment field of the request form.

If the department wants the account to access email, they are instructed to specify that in the comments along with the MSU business use case (why the email is required for their interaction with MSU). If the department wants the account holder to have access to Teams, they will need to request that access (after receiving the NetID(s)) using a Generic Access Request Form. The ARM will also require an MSU business use case be provided.

MSU NetIDs are assigned to all current faculty, staff, students and retirees. A NetID is a unique alphanumeric identifier auto-generated from the user's name. Your NetID is your personal identifier at MSU and serves as your login to many university computing and networking services. Your NetID also determines your MSU email address which is netid@msu.edu (e.g. the NetID msuspartan would have the email address msuspartan@msu.edu).
