Activating a NetID as a New Student

Question

How do I activate my NetID as a new student at MSU?

Answer

The ID Office maintains NetIDs and has instructions how to activate on their website - netid.msu.edu. Their instructions are here (link).

Additional Info

Because your MSU account is the only e-mail account to which official notices are sent (once admitted), it is very important to activate even if you already have another e-mail account. When you arrive on campus, many professors will communicate with you regarding class assignments, examinations, papers, etc. via your MSU e-mail account.

During the admissions application process at Michigan State University, you will receive your Student Number and PAN (personal access number) when they are available via your Admissions Account (portal).

Please note that your NetID activation data may not be in the NetID system until several days after receipt of your letter of admissions. Periodically check your Admissions account to see when you can select to "Show Personal Access Number".

Once your NetID is activated, you can log in to the official MSU e-mail system at https://spartanmail.msu.edu. Additionally, you will be able to use your NetID to:

  • reserve a space in a New Student Orientation (NSO) via the web.
  • access information about your financial aid package (if this applies to you)
  • receive information and complete required forms regarding immunization (students under 18 will be sent paper copies)
  • receive official communications from MSU that are sent to you via e-mail only
  • access your schedule/enrollment, grades, academic, student accounts, holds, address, and financial assistance data from http://stuinfo.msu.edu
  • access housing assignment information
  • access on-campus MSUnet Wireless services
  • access public on-campus Computer Classrooms
  • and more

MSU NetIDs are assigned to all current faculty, staff, students and retirees. A NetID is a unique alphanumeric identifier auto-generated from the user's name. Your NetID is your personal identifier at MSU and serves as your login to many university computing and networking services. Your NetID also determines your MSU email address which is netid@msu.edu (e.g. the NetID msuspartan would have the email address msuspartan@msu.edu).
